Twin Islands, once known as the Ulloa Islands, are two small islands located in British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the Discovery Islands, found southeast of Cortes Island. These islands sit between the large Vancouver Island and the Canadian mainland.
The southern island is about 1.5 kilometers (about 1 mile) across. A narrow channel, only about 60 meters (about 200 feet) wide, separates it from the slightly smaller northern island. The northern island has more trees and is less rocky than the southern one. The islands are managed by the Strathcona Regional District.
Who Has Owned Twin Islands?
In the late 1950s, a German royal family bought Twin Islands. Maximilian, Margrave of Baden, who was a prince from the German state of Baden-Baden, purchased them. He wanted the islands to be a summer getaway for his family.
A Royal Visit to the Islands
Twin Islands have even hosted royalty! On August 13, 1994, Queen Elizabeth II visited the islands for a private break. While the Queen was relaxing on Twin Islands, her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was on a separate trip. He visited places like Yellowknife and Iqaluit in Canada's northern territories.
