Two Strike (Numpkahapa, 1831–1915) was a Brulé Lakota chief. He was born in the White River Valley in what is now Nebraska. He earned his Lakota name, "Nomkahpa," which means "Knocks Two Off." He got this name in a battle with the Utes. During the fight, he knocked two enemies off their horses with one swing of his war club.

Two Strike was a leader during the Plains Indian wars. He fought in many battles against the U.S. Army. He also took part in conflicts with the Pawnee, who were old rivals. He fought alongside other famous chiefs like Crow Dog and Crazy Horse.

The Battle of Summit Springs

In 1869, Chief Two Strike and his group were at the Battle of Summit Springs. This battle happened on July 11, 1869. They were camped with groups of the Southern Cheyenne.

A Surprise Attack

The U.S. Fifth Cavalry and 50 Pawnee scouts launched a surprise attack. They attacked the camp where Two Strike's group was staying. Buffalo Bill Cody was there, working as a chief scout for the U.S. Army.

Aftermath of the Battle

During the battle, Chief Tall Bull of the Southern Cheyenne was killed. About 51 people from the Lakota and Cheyenne camp also died. Seventeen women and children were taken prisoner. Many Lakota and Cheyenne people managed to escape. After the battle, the soldiers burned the camp. This included their tipis and all their supplies.

The Massacre Canyon Incident

Chief Two Strike was a main leader in another important event. This happened on August 5, 1873. He led a large group of over a thousand Oglala and Brulé warriors.

Conflict with the Pawnee

This group attacked a band of Pawnee Indians. The Pawnee had left their reservation in Nebraska to hunt buffalo. This area was near the Republican River in what is now Hitchcock County, Nebraska.

The Outcome

In this battle, between 70 and 100 Pawnee people were killed. This event is now known as Massacre Canyon. It was a very sad and violent day in the history of the Plains.
