About Tye Tribbett
Early Life and Music
Tye Tribbett was born on January 26, 1976, in Camden, New Jersey. He grew up in the El Bethel church in Camden. His father, Bishop Thomas Tyrone Tribbett, was a pastor. His mother, Neicy Tribbett, was a minister and a disc jockey.
Tye started playing the keyboard when he was just 5 years old. He grew up playing music in his church. As a teenager, he played piano for different community choirs. These included Steve Middleton and the Tri-State Mass Choir. He also played for the Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar.
Starting Greater Anointing (G.A.)
In 1996, Tye created a choir called "Greater Anointing," or G.A. This group was made up of his family and friends who loved making music. Tye felt right away that this group was special. He said, "That first rehearsal blew my mind... I knew that this is what I was supposed to be doing."
Later that year, the group won the McDonald's Gospel Choir Competition. In 1997, they won both regional and national awards at the Wrigley's Gospel Choir Competition.
Tye Tribbett and G.A. became very popular in the Philadelphia area. They were known for their exciting and high-energy performances. Many fans and people in the music industry noticed them.
Big Breaks and Famous Friends
The group was soon asked to work with famous producers, Buster and Shavoni. They were making the soundtrack for the 1998 DreamWorks animated movie, The Prince of Egypt. Tye Tribbett and G.A. sang on the song "Let Go, Let God" with Mary Mary. The movie and soundtrack were very successful. This helped the group become well-known in the music world.
In 2000, the group toured with Faith Hill. This led to them working with many other famous artists. They worked with Will Smith, Usher, Don Henley, Justin Timberlake, and Sting. They also worked with R&B artists like Jill Scott, India Arie, and Musiq Soulchild. They even helped with Justin Timberlake's big hit song, "Cry Me A River", in 2002.
In 2000, the group released their first album, "Ideas and Concepts," on their own.
Mainstream Success with G.A.
Tye's amazing keyboard skills and lively performances caught the eye of important people in the music industry. Soon, he signed with Columbia Records.
On June 8, 2004, Tye Tribbett and G.A. released their first major album, "Life". It quickly reached number 6 on the Billboard US Gospel charts. Popular songs from this album included "No Way" and "Everything." The album also featured other gospel artists like Kim Burrell and John P. Kee. The choir became known for their powerful live shows and their band, Soundcheck, was praised for its polished sound.
For their next album, Tribbett & G.A. recorded a live concert on December 3, 2005. This was at the Deliverance Evangelistic Church in Philadelphia. Before this recording, the group faced a sad time. One of their members, Dr. Kenneth Riddle, passed away in a car crash in August 2005. Two other people close to the choir also died. Even with these sad events, the group kept going. They prayed and worked hard. Tye challenged G.A. to trust in God and not earn money from secular music for a year. Everyone in the group accepted this challenge. The result was their album Victory Live!, released in May 2006.
Victory Live! was a huge success. It became one of the most celebrated gospel albums of the 2000s. The album reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. This was the first time for Tribbett. The song "Victory" became a number 1 hit on Gospel Radio. Tye Tribbett won two Stellar Awards and was nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Their third album, Stand Out, was recorded live in August 2007. It was released in May 2008. This album featured other singers like Kierra Sheard and Kim Burrell. Popular songs included "Chasing After You" and "Look Up."
In late 2009, after 13 years and four major albums, Tye Tribbett decided to end G.A. This allowed the members to follow their own dreams and goals.
Tye's Solo Career
In 2010, Tye Tribbett released his first album without G.A., called Fresh. This album went straight to number 1 on the US Billboard Gospel chart. The music on this album had a more modern and mainstream sound.
After recording live shows in 2012, Tye released his fifth album, Greater Than, on August 6, 2013. This was his first album with Motown Gospel. It was his third album in a row to reach number 1. Critics loved Greater Than. The album brought back the sound Tye was known for earlier in his career. It also showed off his improved production style. Key songs from this album were "If He Did It Before (Same God)" and "He Turned It." Greater Than earned Tye his first two Grammy Awards in 2014, including Best Gospel Album.
After touring for several years, he released "The Bloody Win" in 2017. This album was recorded live in 2016.
In 2022, Tribbett released All Things New. Then, in 2023, he released a live version called All Things New - Live in Orlando. This album featured live performances of songs from his 2022 album and older hits. He won another Grammy for Best Gospel Album for this work.
