Thomas Tyrone "Tye" Tribbett (born January 26, 1976) is a famous American gospel music singer, songwriter, and keyboard player. He is also a choir director. Tye Tribbett started a gospel music group called Tye Tribbett & G.A. (which means 'Greater Anointing'). This group has won many awards, including Grammy nominations and Stellar Awards.

Tye Tribbett's Story

Growing Up

Tye Tribbett was born on January 26, 1976. His hometown is Camden, New Jersey. He grew up in the El Bethel church in Camden. His father, Bishop Thomas Tyrone Tribbett, was a pastor. His mother, Neicy Tribbett, was also a minister and a disc jockey.

Tye started playing the keyboard when he was just 5 years old. He played music in his church as he grew up. As a teenager, he played piano for different community choirs. These included Steve Middleton and the Tri-State Mass Choir. He also played for the Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar.

Starting Greater Anointing (G.A.)

In 1996, Tye created a choir called "Greater Anointing," or G.A. It was made up of his family and friends who loved making music. Tye felt right away that this group was special. He said the music, voices, and spirit of the choir were amazing. He knew this was what he was meant to do.

Later that year, the group won the McDonald's Gospel Choir Competition. In 1997, they won regional and national awards. These were from the Wrigley's Gospel Choir Competition.

Tye Tribbett and G.A. became very popular in churches. They were known for their exciting and high-energy performances. Many fans and music industry people noticed them.

Big Opportunities

The group was later asked to work with famous producers, Buster and Shavoni. They were making the soundtrack for the 1998 DreamWorks animated movie, The Prince of Egypt. G.A. sang on the song "Let Go, Let God." They performed with other gospel artists like Mary Mary. The movie and soundtrack were very successful. This helped G.A. become well-known in the music world.

The group toured with Faith Hill in 2000. This led to them working with many other stars. These included Will Smith, Usher, Justin Timberlake, and Sting. They also worked with R&B artists like Jill Scott and India Arie. They even helped with Justin Timberlake's big hit song "Cry Me A River" in 2002.

In 2000, the group released their first album. It was called "Ideas and Concepts."

Mainstream Success with G.A.

Tye's amazing keyboard skills and lively performances caught the eye of music industry leaders. This happened during a show with singer Vivian Green. Soon after, Tye signed with Columbia Records.

On June 8, 2004, Tye Tribbett and G.A. released their first album with a major record label. It was called "Life". This album reached number 6 on the Billboard US Gospel charts. Popular songs from it included "No Way" and "Everything." The album also featured other gospel singers like Kim Burrell and John P. Kee. The choir became known for their high-energy shows and polished sound. Their band was called Soundcheck.

Victory Live! Album

For their next album, Tribbett & G.A. recorded a live concert. This happened on December 3, 2005, in Philadelphia. Before the recording, the group faced a sad time. One of their members, Dr. Kenneth Riddle, died in a car crash in August 2005. Two other people close to the choir also passed away. These deaths happened within five months before the concert.

Instead of stopping, the group prayed and kept going. Tye encouraged G.A. to focus on their faith. They decided to rely on God for a year, not earning money from secular music. Everyone in G.A. agreed. The result was their album Victory Live!, released in May 2006.

Victory Live! was a huge success. It became one of the most celebrated gospel albums of the 2000s. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. This was a first for Tye Tribbett. The song "Victory" became a number 1 Gospel Radio hit. Tye won two Stellar Awards and received three Grammy nominations for this album.

Their third album, Stand Out, continued their success. It was recorded live in Virginia Beach in August 2007 and released in May 2008. This album featured singers Kierra Sheard and Kim Burrell. Popular songs included "Chasing After You" and "Look Up."

In late 2009, after 13 years and four major albums, Tye Tribbett decided to end G.A. He wanted the members to follow their own dreams.

Tye's Solo Career

In 2010, Tye Tribbett released his first album without G.A. It was called Fresh. This album went to number 1 on the US Billboard Gospel chart. It had a more modern and mainstream sound.

After recording live shows in 2012, Tye released his fifth album, Greater Than, on August 6, 2013. This was his first album with Motown Gospel. It was his third album in a row to reach number 1. Critics loved it. The album brought back the sound Tye was known for, but with a more polished style. Songs like "If He Did It Before (Same God)" and "He Turned It" were very popular. Greater Than earned Tye his first two Grammy awards in 2014, including Best Gospel Album.

After touring for several years, Tye released "The Bloody Win" in 2017. This album was recorded live in Greenville, South Carolina, in 2016.

In 2022, Tribbett released All Things New. In 2023, he released a live version called All Things New - Live in Orlando. This album featured live performances of songs from his 2022 album and older hits. He won another Grammy for Best Gospel Album for this work.

Church and Family Life

Tye Tribbett and his wife, Shanté, are pastors at the Live Church in Orlando, Florida.

Tye is married to Shanté Tribbett. She was also a member of the Greater Anointing group. They have two daughters together.

Tye's brother, Thaddaeus, is part of his band "Soundcheck." He also plays for other artists. Tye has two sisters, DeShantel Tribbett-Robinson and DeMaris Tribbett-Toy. They both sang in Greater Anointing.

Tye enjoys spending time with his family and working out. In April 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, Tye shared a message of hope. He released a song called "We Gon' Be Alright," which included parts of Kendrick Lamar's song Alright.
