History of Tyler
Tyler was officially planned in 1879. It was named after C. B. Tyler, who was a land agent and newspaper editor in Minnesota. A post office has been open in Tyler since 1879.
The Danebod area of Tyler was first built by Danish settlers. Today, this area is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Geography and Location
Tyler is a city with a total area of about 2.01 square miles (5.21 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 1.97 square miles (5.10 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.10 square kilometers), is water.
U.S. Highway 14 is an important road that goes through the city.

In 2010, the city of Tyler had 1,143 people. There were 520 households, and 292 of these were families. The city had about 580 people per square mile (224 per square kilometer). There were 583 homes, with about 296 homes per square mile (114 per square kilometer).
Most people in Tyler were White (96.9%). A small number were African American (0.3%), Native American (0.3%), or Asian (0.2%). About 2.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 23.1% of households had children under 18. Nearly half (46.7%) were married couples. About 40.8% of households had only one person living there. About 21.4% of households had someone 65 years or older living alone. The average household had 2.10 people, and the average family had 2.85 people.
The average age in Tyler was 46.1 years. About 21.9% of residents were under 18. About 26.3% were 65 years or older. The city had slightly more females (51.9%) than males (48.1%).
Tornado Events
On August 21, 1918, a very strong tornado hit Tyler. Sadly, 36 people lost their lives. This was the fourth deadliest tornado in Minnesota's history.
On July 1, 2011, another tornado passed through Tyler. This time, no one was hurt or died. However, a few homes were significantly damaged.
Fun Annual Events
Aebleskiver Days
Aebleskiver Days is a yearly celebration in Tyler. It happens on the fourth weekend of July. The event is named after æbleskiver, which are round, pancake-like treats from Denmark. On Saturday evening, a parade goes down Main Street. Different groups and neighborhoods make floats for the parade.
Lincoln County Fair
The Lincoln County Fairgrounds are located in Tyler. The yearly county fair takes place in August. It is a popular event for the community.
Danebod Folk School
The Danebod Folk School opened in 1888. It was named after a Danish queen. The school's campus, including the Danebod Lutheran Church, has been part of the National Historic Register since 1975. This is because of the important architecture and history of its buildings.

The Tyler Municipal Airport is an airport owned by the city. It is open for public use and is located about one nautical mile northwest of Tyler.

- Bertha Lee Hansen (1882-1966) was a state legislator in Illinois.
- Richard F. Kneip (1933-1987) was the seventh United States Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore and the 25th Governor of South Dakota.
- Joseph Vadheim (1893-1961) was a Minnesota state senator, a businessman, and a pharmacist.
