Tyus Akili Battle (born September 23, 1997) is an American professional basketball player. He last played for the Guangxi Rhinos team. Tyus played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange. He won a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship. Many college teams wanted him to play for them. He first chose to play for the Michigan Wolverines in 2015. Later, he changed his mind and decided to play for Syracuse.

Tyus Battle's Early Life and Basketball Journey
Tyus Battle grew up in Edison, New Jersey. He became a top basketball player when he was in sixth grade. He played for Gill St. Bernard's School for three years. Then, he moved to St. Joseph High School. This school was closer to his home. Famous players like Jay Williams and Karl-Anthony Towns also went there.
Tyus was a highly-rated player in the 2016 class. In his sophomore year (2013–14), he averaged 22.5 points per game. He also got 6.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2 steals per game. He had a wrist injury that season. As a junior, he missed the first six weeks of the season. This was due to a foot injury. He only played in 9 games that year. His average points dropped to 16.9 per game.
Many colleges wanted Tyus to join their basketball teams. In June 2014, Michigan offered him a scholarship. Kentucky coach John Calipari visited him. Tyus narrowed his choices to 11 schools in November 2014. These included Syracuse, Duke, and Michigan. By February 2015, he had seven schools on his list. He visited Duke, Louisville, and Michigan. He also planned to visit Syracuse.
In May 2015, Tyus said he would play for Michigan. At that time, he was a 5-star recruit. He was ranked number 14 in his class by ESPN. Michigan's 2016 recruiting class was looking very strong. However, in June 2015, Tyus changed his mind. He decided not to go to Michigan. On July 13, he committed to play for Syracuse.
Tyus Battle's College Basketball Career
Tyus Battle played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange. As a freshman, he scored 11.3 points per game. In his sophomore year, he was named to the Second-team All-ACC. This is a big honor in college basketball.
In the 2018 NCAA tournament, Tyus helped Syracuse reach the Sweet Sixteen. This is one of the top 16 teams in the country. They were eventually beaten by Duke. Tyus played more minutes per game than any other player in NCAA Division I that season. He averaged 19.2 points per game. During his sophomore year, he scored his 1,000th point.
After his sophomore season, Tyus thought about joining the 2018 NBA draft. He decided to return to Syracuse for his junior year instead. As a junior, he averaged 17.2 points per game. He also improved his shooting. After his junior season, he declared for the NBA draft. This meant he would not play his final year of college basketball.
Tyus Battle's Professional Basketball Journey
Tyus Battle was not chosen in the 2019 NBA draft. However, he signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He joined their team for the preseason in October 2019. Later, he was sent to their NBA G League team, the Iowa Wolves. With the Iowa Wolves, he averaged 8.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
In July 2020, Tyus signed with BC Enisey. This team plays in the VTB United League. In February 2021, Tyus won the Slam Dunk Contest. This was during the VTB United League All-Star Weekend.
In July 2021, he signed with Dinamo Sassari in Italy. He played there for a season. He averaged 7.6 points per game. In January 2022, Tyus signed with Hapoel Gilboa Galil in Israel. In March 2023, he joined ADA Blois in France. Later in 2023, he played for the Guangxi Rhinos.
Tyus Battle's National Team Experience
In 2013, Tyus Battle tried out for the United States team. This team would play in the FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship. He did not make the team that year. However, in 2014, he was chosen for the 12-man team. This team played in the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship.
In the championship game against Australia, Tyus scored a key basket. This put Team USA ahead for good. The team went on to win the gold medal! In 2015, Tyus was invited to try out for the USA Basketball Men's U19 World Championship Team. But he had injuries from his junior season. Because of this, he could not try out for the team.

Tyus Battle's Family Life
Tyus Battle's parents are Daniella and Gary Battle. His father, Gary, was also a great basketball player. He played for the University of New Haven. Tyus's stepmother, Tanya Battle, played basketball at the University of Miami. Tyus has a brother named Khalif Battle. Khalif plays basketball for Gonzaga University. His sister, GiGi Battle, is a top high school women's basketball player in New Jersey. She is in the class of 2026.
