Ulrick Chérubin (born December 24, 1943 – died September 25, 2014) was an important Canadian politician. He was the mayor of Amos, Quebec, from 2002 until he passed away in 2014.
Mr. Chérubin made history as one of the first Black Canadians to be elected mayor in Quebec. He led a town, Amos, where most people were of Québécois background.

Early Life and Education
Growing Up in Haiti
Ulrick Chérubin was born in Jacmel, Haiti, in 1943. He was the youngest of five children in his family. He went to school in Haiti.
One of his childhood friends and classmates was Michel Adrien. Michel later became the mayor of Mont-Laurier, another town in Quebec.
Moving to Canada
In 1970, Ulrick Chérubin left Haiti. He was studying mathematics at a university in Port-au-Prince at the time. He moved to Canada to escape the government of François Duvalier.
He continued his studies at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. There, he focused on education. After finishing his studies, he taught religion in Cap-de-la-Madeleine.
Family and New Studies
In 1971, Ulrick Chérubin married Immacula Morriset. She was a nurse and also from Haiti.
He kept teaching in 1973. He also studied administration and how to teach English as a Second Language. He did these studies at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. In 1974, he moved to Amos, Quebec.
Political Journey
Becoming a Councillor
Ulrick Chérubin started his political career in Amos in 1994. He was first elected as a city councillor. He won his seat by a large number of votes.
In 1998, he was re-elected as a councillor without anyone running against him. This showed how much people trusted him.
From Councillor to Mayor
After serving as a councillor, Ulrick Chérubin was elected as the mayor of Amos. He took on this important role in 2002.
In 2004, he received the Jackie Robinson Award. This award honored him as a pioneering Black Canadian leader. It was given by a group in Montreal.
Visiting Boston
In 2009, two city councillors from Boston, Massachusetts, honored Ulrick Chérubin. They suggested that January 2, 2010, be named Ulrick Chérubin Day in Boston. This happened when he visited their city.
Winning Re-election
Mr. Chérubin was very popular in Amos. He was re-elected as mayor four times in a row. In 2013, he won his fourth term. He received 73% of the votes, beating another city councillor.
Helping His Town on TV
On November 10, 2013, Ulrick Chérubin appeared on a TV show. It was Le Banquier, which is the Quebec version of Deal or No Deal. He was chosen from thousands of people to be on the show.
He won a total of $222,500. He used this money to help his town. The funds were for the 100th birthday celebration of Amos.
Passing Away
Ulrick Chérubin passed away on September 25, 2014, in Amos. He was 70 years old. He died from heart failure.
