The Story of Union Hill: How It Began

The village of Union Hill was settled by two brothers, Cornelius and John E. Schobey. John E. Schobey is thought to be the founder of the town. He moved to a nearby area called Essex Township in 1854.

Naming the Village

In 1861, John Schobey opened a post office. This was at the start of the Civil War, a big conflict in American history. The war was fought between the "Union" (the northern states) and the "Confederacy" (the southern states). Mr. Schobey wanted the village's name to include the word "union" because of this war. After some time, the area became known as Union Hill.

Growth and Development

The town started to grow more in 1882. This happened when the Indiana, Illinois and Iowa Railroad was built through the area. This railroad is now known as the Kankakee Belt Route. Union Hill officially became a village in either 1903 or 1904.
