The Universidad del Desarrollo (which means "University for Development" in Spanish) is a Chilean private university. It is one of the more expensive universities in its region. Its main campus is in Santiago de Chile, and it has another campus in Concepción.

History of UDD

The Universidad del Desarrollo was started in Concepción in 1990. It was founded by a group of important people: Joaquín Lavín, Carlos Délano, Ernesto Silva, Cristián Larroulet, Hernán Büchi, and Federico Valdés.

The first study program offered was Business Administration. The next year, the university added programs in architecture, journalism, and opened a law school.

In 1993, the university opened its main campus. The following year, new programs for industrial engineering and social sciences began. In 1997, the university became fully independent from the Catholic University of Chile. Two years later, in 1999, the university opened a new campus and welcomed students from the former Universidad de Las Condes.

In 2001, a new campus was opened in San Carlos de Apoquindo, where most of the university's schools are now located. However, the Medical School and the Drama School are still in the old Universidad de Las Condes building.

In 2006, the university opened a new building in Concepción for its Health Area schools. This building is very close to the main campus there.

UDD Rankings and Achievements

The MBA program at UDD (which is a special business degree for people who already have a first degree) was ranked first in Latin America by América Economía. This is a very important business magazine in Latin America. Their MBA program was also ranked 12th among all business schools in Latin America. América Economía also said that UDD was the best university in Latin America for helping students develop skills in starting their own businesses and becoming leaders.

In 2017, UDD's Medicine School was ranked second in Chile in the national medical exam. This meant it did better than most older, more traditional universities in Chile. Also, UDD is currently ranked as the best private university in Chile. Overall, it stands in 5th place, according to the national CNAP accreditation program.

Sports at UDD

UDD has many sports teams that compete in university leagues and championships. These include football (soccer), hockey, volleyball, rodeo, debate, tennis, and basketball.

Accreditation of UDD

Accreditation is like a quality check for universities. It shows that a university meets certain standards. The Universidad del Desarrollo applied for and received accreditation for five years in 2006. This accreditation covered how the university is managed, the quality of its teaching, how it connects with the community, and its programs for ongoing education.
