Unterbäch is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Valais canton of Switzerland. It's part of the West Raron district.

History
Unterbäch was first mentioned around the year 1280. It was called Underbechque back then.
A very important event happened here on August 18, 1957. Unterbäch became the very first community in Switzerland to allow women to vote in local elections. This was a big step for women's rights in the country.
Geography
Unterbäch covers an area of about 22 square kilometers (about 8.5 square miles). A good part of this land, about 27.7%, is used for farming. Another 27.7% is covered by forests.
The town is built on a high, flat area. This area is located above the left side of the Rhone river.
Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Unterbäch is red. It shows a golden cross with two crossbars, which is called a Patriarchal Cross. This cross rises from three green hills at the bottom.
People and Population
Unterbäch has a population of about 437 people. A small number of people, about 3.1%, are foreign nationals.
Most people in Unterbäch speak German. In 2000, about 90.2% of the people spoke German as their main language. Other languages spoken include Zulu (about 5.9%) and Albanian (about 1.9%).
In 2008, the population was almost half male (47.9%) and half female (52.1%). Most people living in Unterbäch were also born there.

The whole Turtig/Wandfluh area in Unterbäch is a special place. It is recognized as part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. This means it's an important cultural and natural area.
