Uqi Uqini is a tall volcano in the Andes mountains. It stands 5,532 meters (18,150 feet) high. The name "Uqi Uqini" comes from the Aymara language. It can mean "the one with the uqi uqi plant" or "the one with a complex of grey-brown color." Sometimes, its name is spelled Oke Okeni.
This volcano is located right on the border between two countries: Bolivia and Chile. In Chile, it's part of the Arica y Parinacota Region. In Bolivia, it's in the Oruro Department, specifically in the Sajama Province, Turku Municipality, Chachakumani Canton. Uqi Uqini is found south of National Route 4, close to the Chungara-Tambo Quemado mountain pass. It is north of other volcanoes like Umurata, Acotango, and Capurata.
Uqi Uqini is a special type of volcano called a "twin volcano." This means it formed from two main parts. It is made up of rocks called andesite, dacite, and rhyolite. Scientists believe Uqi Uqini formed during the Pleistocene epoch, which was a long time ago. Other nearby volcanoes, like the Kimsa Chata complex, also formed around the same time.
