Urban area facts for kids
An urban area is a place where many people live and work close together. Think of it as a busy city or town. In urban areas, buildings are usually packed tightly, and there are many more people living in each square mile compared to the countryside. This is the opposite of a rural area, which has farms and open nature.

What is an Urban Area?
An urban area is a place where many people live and work. It has a high population density. This means lots of people are in a small space. Buildings are usually close together. Urban areas are often cities and towns. Most jobs here are in factories or offices. You won't find much farming because there isn't enough open land.
Urban vs. Rural
It's easy to tell urban areas apart from rural ones. Urban areas are busy, with many buildings and people. Rural areas are more open. They have farms, forests, and fewer people. Urban areas are where most people live in many countries today.
How Countries Define Urban Areas
Different countries have their own ways to say what an urban area is. These rules often depend on how many people live in the country. They also show how much of the country is urbanized. For example, in Poland, any place called a "town" is an urban area. In China, a place is urban if it has more than 1,500 people per square kilometer.
Some countries, like Canada and those in Scandinavia, look at how close houses are. If houses are built every 200 meters or closer, it's usually called an urban area.
What is a Metropolitan Area?
A very large urban area is called a Metropolitan area. This includes a big city and all the smaller towns and areas connected to it. These areas usually grow around one main city. They are often very busy and have many people.
