Uriel Lubrani (Hebrew: אורי לוברני) was an important Israeli diplomat and military leader. He was born on October 7, 1926, and passed away on March 5, 2018.

He worked for Israel's Foreign Ministry, which handles relations with other countries. In 1964, he became an ambassador to Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda. Later, from 1967 to 1971, he served as the ambassador to Ethiopia. He also led Israel's diplomatic team in Iran from 1973 to 1978.

Uri Lubrani's Early Life

Uri Lubrani was born in a city called Haifa. He was the only child of Aaron and Rose Lubrani. He went to school at the Hebrew Reali School.

In 1944, when he was 18, he joined the Haganah. This was a Jewish defense organization in Palestine before Israel became a country. He also served in the Palmach, which was the Haganah's fighting force.

Lubrani helped with secret operations to bring Jewish immigrants into Palestine. This was known as Aliyah Bet. In 1946, he went to southern France. There, he led a training camp for people from English-speaking countries. These volunteers wanted to help the Jewish cause.

He returned to fight in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. This war led to the creation of the State of Israel. During the war, he worked as an intelligence officer. He served in the 7th Armored Brigade and the Yiftach Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces. Uri Lubrani passed away peacefully in Tel Aviv in 2018, at the age of 91.

Working as a Diplomat

After the war, Uri Lubrani joined the Israeli Foreign Ministry. This is the part of the government that deals with other countries. In 1950, he became a secretary for Foreign Minister Moshe Sharet.

From 1953 to 1956, he studied at London University. He earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts (BA). When he came back to Israel in 1956, he got a new job. He became an adviser to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion on Arab affairs. In this role, he helped develop Arab villages. He also helped recruit Druze people into military service. Later, he worked for Prime Minister Levi Eshkol.

In 1964, he officially joined the group of diplomats. He was appointed as an ambassador to Uganda. He also served as an ambassador to Burundi and Rwanda at the same time. He held these positions until 1967. From 1967 to 1971, he was the ambassador to Ethiopia. After that, he worked as a director for a large company called Koor Industries Ltd..

From 1973 to 1978, he led Israel's diplomatic team in Iran. He had the rank of ambassador there.

From 1979 to 1983, he worked in private businesses. In 1983, Israel had forces in southern Lebanon. Lubrani became the person in charge of coordinating their activities there. This was after the 1982 Lebanon War.

In 1990, Lubrani helped with Operation Solomon in Ethiopia. This was a big effort to bring Ethiopian Jews to Israel. He was also part of Israel's team in Geneva. They were negotiating to exchange prisoners with Hezbollah. In 1992, he led the Israeli team to Lebanon. This happened after a peace meeting called the Madrid Conference in Washington, DC.

Lubrani continued to advise the Minister of Defense. He also coordinated government work in Lebanon. Even after Israel left southern Lebanon, he kept advising the Ministry of Defense. Later, he advised the Ministry of Strategic Affairs. He worked as a consultant until 2010.

His daughter, Osnat Lubrani, also works for the United Nations. In 2018, she became the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine. Before that, she worked in the Pacific region. She has also held important roles in conflict resolution and human rights in other countries.
