Ussel (which is spelled Ussèl in the Occitan language) is a town in central France. It is located in the Corrèze department, which is part of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Ussel is an important town because it's the main city (called a subprefecture) of its area, known as the Ussel arrondissement. It was also the historical capital of the Haute-Corrèze region.

Where is Ussel Located?
Ussel is found in the Massif Central mountain range, at the base of the Millevaches plateau. The town itself sits on top of a hill. This hill is between the valleys of two rivers, the Diège and the Sarsonne.
The area of Ussel is about 50.4 square kilometers (about 19.5 square miles). The average height above sea level for the town is 685 meters (about 2,247 feet). At the city hall, the height is 620 meters (about 2,034 feet).
Ussel is quite far from some of France's big cities. It is about 294 kilometers (183 miles) from Bordeaux and 295 kilometers (183 miles) from Toulouse. Paris is about 483 kilometers (300 miles) away, and Lyon is about 266 kilometers (165 miles) away.
The town of Ussel is surrounded by several other smaller towns. To the north is Saint-Pardoux-le-Neuf. To the northeast is Aix, and to the east is Saint-Fréjoux. To the southeast, you'll find Saint-Exupéry-les-Roches, and to the south is Mestes. Saint-Angel is to the southwest, and Chaveroche is to the west. Finally, to the northwest are Lignareix and Saint-Pardoux-le-Vieux.
Three rivers flow through the Ussel area. These are the Diège river (which is why the town is sometimes called Ussel-sur-Diège), the Sarsonne river, and a smaller stream called Étang Roux.
