Uto Peak is a cool mountain located in British Columbia, Canada. It stands tall in the Selkirk Mountains, right next to another big mountain called Mount Sir Donald. Two brave climbers, Emil Huber and Carl Sulzer, were the first to reach its top way back in 1890.
What's in a Name?
Ever wonder how Uto Peak got its name? It's named after a group called the "Uto section" of the Swiss Alpine Club. This club is for people who love climbing mountains! Emil Huber and Carl Sulzer, the first climbers, were part of this group.
The "Uto section" itself got its name from an old name for Uetliberg mountain. Uetliberg is in Switzerland and looks over the city of Zürich.
Mountain Weather
Uto Peak has a very cold climate, especially in winter. It's known for its snowy winters and mild summers. Imagine temperatures dropping below -20 degrees Celsius! With strong winds, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 degrees Celsius.
All the snow and rain that falls on the mountain eventually melts and flows away. This water goes into two main rivers: the Illecillewaet River to the west, and the Beaver River to the east.
