Uxbridge and South Ruislip (UK Parliament constituency) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Uxbridge and South Ruislip is an area in Greater London that chooses a person to represent them in the UK Parliament. This area is called a "constituency." It was first created in 2010.

Since 2010, the Conservative Party has won the elections in this area. John Randall was the Member of Parliament (MP) from 2010 to 2015. After him, Boris Johnson was the MP from 2015 to 2019.

Boris Johnson later became the Prime Minister of the UK on 24 July 2019. In 2017, he won by 5,034 more votes than his closest opponent. This was the smallest winning difference for a sitting prime minister since 1924.

In the 2019 election, his main opponent was Ali Milani from the Labour Party. Experts thought the seat might be difficult for the Conservatives to keep in April 2019. However, by November 2019, another group thought it was "likely Conservative."

About 57.2% of people in this area voted to leave the European Union in the Brexit vote. Later, in 2018, reports suggested that more people in the area (51.4%) now supported staying in the European Union.

In 2019, some fun and unusual candidates ran for election. These included Count Binface and Lord Buckethead. Another candidate, William Tobin, aimed to get no votes at all. He couldn't vote himself because he had lived outside the UK for 15 years.

History of the Area's Parliament Seat

Most of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip area used to be part of the Uxbridge constituency. Some parts also came from the Ruislip-Northwood and Hayes and Harlington areas.

The Conservative Party has won the elections here in 2010 and 2015. In 2010, John Randall was the Conservative candidate who won. In 2015, Boris Johnson won the election for the Conservatives.

Parts of the Constituency

A constituency is made up of smaller areas called "electoral wards." These wards are like local neighborhoods. The Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency includes these wards:

  • Cavendish
  • Hillingdon East
  • Manor
  • South Ruislip
  • Uxbridge North
  • Uxbridge South
  • Yiewsley

These wards are all located within the London Borough of Hillingdon.

About the Area

This area is in the "Outer London" commuter belt. This means many people who live here travel into central London for work. There are seven tube stations in the area, making it easy to get around.

The constituency also has nice green spaces, like the Colne Valley regional park. Most of the buildings are close to the main town centre of Uxbridge. Brunel University is also located in this constituency.

Most of the local wards in the borough have Conservative councillors. However, the Uxbridge South ward has Labour councillors.
