Valence (French pronunciation: [valɑ̃s]; Occitan: Valença) is a small commune in the Charente department in southwestern France. A commune is like a local government area, similar to a small town or village. A department is a larger region in France, like a county or state.

Even though this town is called Valence, it is not the birthplace of William de Valence. He was a famous person who later became an Earl (a type of noble title). He was actually born in a different place also named Valence, which was a Cistercian abbey (a type of monastery) in the Vienne department, near a town called Lusignan.

The mayor and the local council work together to make decisions for the community. Valence is also part of a larger group of communes called Cœur de Charente, which helps different towns work together on bigger projects.
