Valentin Iosifovich Gaft (Russian: Валенти́н Ио́сифович Гафт) was a famous Soviet and Russian actor. He was known for his many roles in movies and plays. He was given the special title of People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1984, which is a big honor for actors in Russia.

His Early Life and Schooling
Valentin Gaft was born in Moscow, which is the capital city of Russia. His parents, Iosif and Gita Gaft, were Jewish. His family moved to Moscow from a city called Poltava in Ukraine. During World War II, his father, Iosif Gaft, was a soldier in the Red Army and became a Major.
From a young age, Valentin loved theater. He enjoyed acting in school plays. After finishing school, he studied acting at the Moscow Art Theatre from 1953 to 1957. Some of his classmates also became very well-known actors, like Oleg Tabakov.
His Career in Theater
After he finished his acting studies, Gaft worked in several different theaters. These included the Mossovet Theatre and the Lenkom Theatre. In 1969, he joined the Sovremennik Theatre. He stayed there for a very long time, acting in many plays until 2019.
His Work in Movies and TV
Valentin Gaft started acting in movies in 1956. His first film was Murder on Dante Street. He later appeared in many other movies, playing different kinds of characters. Some of his notable roles were in films like The First Courier (1968) and Centaurs (1979).
He became very popular after working with the famous director Eldar Ryazanov. He starred in Ryazanov's comedies like The Garage (1979) and Say a Word for the Poor Hussar (1980). He also appeared in Forgotten Melody for a Flute (1987) and Promised Heaven (1991).
In 1994, Gaft played the important role of Woland in the film The Master and Margarita. This movie was based on a famous book, but it was only released much later in 2011.
Besides movies, Valentin Gaft also acted in many television shows and teleplays. He played characters in series like Buddenbrooks and For the Rest of His Life. He was also in the popular TV film Hello, I'm Your Aunt!.
His Personal Life
Valentin Gaft was married to actress Olga Ostroumova from 1996 until he passed away. He was also known for writing short, clever poems called epigrams about other actors and theater people. In the 2013 movie Yolki 3, he even read some of his own poetry.
In 1990, he became a Christian, joining the Eastern Orthodox Church. His wife helped him decide to get baptized.
In 2016, Valentin Gaft was not allowed to enter Ukraine for a period of time. This was because some of his public statements were seen as going against Ukraine's national interests.
Valentin Gaft passed away on December 12, 2020, in Moscow. He was 85 years old.
