Vance is a small town located in the state of Alabama, in the United States. It is found in both Tuscaloosa and Bibb counties. In 2020, about 2,092 people lived there.
Vance is well-known for the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International plant. This factory is the only one of its kind in North America. The part of Vance in Tuscaloosa County is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Bibb County part is included in the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area.

History of Vance: From Trading Post to Town
The area where Vance is now was first settled in 1830. A person named David M. Lindley started a community there. At that time, it was called Trion. It was an important trading post along the Old Huntsville Road.
In 1872, the town's name changed from Trion to Smallwood. This new name honored Charles Smallwood, who owned a sawmill in the area.
Later, in 1879, Smallwood was renamed Vance. This was to honor Dr. William Vance from North Carolina. The town officially became incorporated in 1972.

Geography of Vance
Most of Vance is located in the southeastern part of Tuscaloosa County. The town center is found at 33°9'52.276" North and 87°13'54.185" West. The town also stretches south into Bibb County.
U.S. Route 11 goes right through the middle of Vance. This road leads west about 21 miles to Tuscaloosa. It also goes northeast about 36 miles to downtown Birmingham. Interstate 59 runs alongside Route 11. You can reach Vance from Interstate 59 at Exit 89, which is close to the Mercedes-Benz plant.
The town covers a total area of about 10.2 square miles (26.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small amount being water.
