Vasiliy Vladimirovich Berezutski (Russian: Василий Владимирович Березуцкий; born on June 20, 1982) is a Russian football coach and a former player. He played as a defender and is currently the head coach of the Azerbaijani club Sabah. Vasiliy started his professional football journey in 1999 when he was 17 years old. He played for Torpedo Moscow, where he had trained in their famous academy. He was also a regular player for the Russia national football team, playing his 100th game for his country on September 6, 2016. He often played as a central defender or right-back, but sometimes also as a wingback or midfielder.
Early Football Journey
Vasiliy began playing football at the Smena sports school in Moscow. Later, he moved to the Torpedo academy. His identical twin brother, Aleksei, also trained at the Torpedo academy and became a defender for CSKA Moscow. Vasiliy officially stopped playing football on July 21, 2018.
Playing for Russia
Vasiliy scored his first goal for the Russian national team during a Euro 2008 Qualification match against Macedonia. He was part of Russia's team for UEFA Euro 2008. He came on as a substitute in a game against Greece and started in the semi-final match against Spain.
He was also chosen for Russia's team for UEFA Euro 2012, but he had to leave before the tournament because of a thigh injury. In 2014, he was included in Russia's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and was chosen as the team captain. He also played in UEFA Euro 2016, where he scored a goal in injury time against England, making the score 1–1. Vasiliy officially retired from playing for the national team on March 7, 2018.
Coaching Career
On January 3, 2019, Vasiliy and his twin brother Aleksei started working as assistant coaches for the Dutch club Vitesse. They worked under Leonid Slutsky, who had coached them when they played for CSKA and the national team.
In August 2020, Vasiliy returned to CSKA Moscow as an assistant coach to Viktor Goncharenko. His brother Aleksei joined him there in February 2021. In April 2021, Goncharenko left CSKA and became the coach for FC Krasnodar. Vasiliy followed him as an assistant, while Aleksei stayed at CSKA. On January 5, 2022, Krasnodar fired Goncharenko and Berezutski.
Just five days later, on January 10, 2022, Vasiliy returned to CSKA. This time, he was an assistant to his brother Aleksei, who had become the head coach. On June 15, 2022, both brothers left CSKA by agreement. In early 2024, Berezutski moved to the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, again as an assistant to Slutsky.
On November 25, 2024, Vasiliy Berezutski signed a 2.5-year contract with the Azerbaijani club Sabah, becoming their new head coach. He quickly led Sabah FK to a victory in the Azərbaycan Kuboku 2024/2025 Round of 16.
