Vergeletto was once a small town, or municipality, located in the Ticino area of Switzerland. It was part of the Locarno district. On April 10, 2016, Vergeletto joined with three other nearby towns – Gresso, Mosogno, and Isorno – to form a larger town called Onsernone. So, Vergeletto is now part of Onsernone.

A Look at Vergeletto's History

Vergeletto has a long history! Back in the Middle Ages, it was part of a larger community called the Onsernone Vicinanza. This was a group of villages that worked together.

For a while, Vergeletto was also connected to the town of Gresso. They were one municipality until 1882, when they became separate towns. Vergeletto also got its own church area, or parish, in 1757, after being part of Russo's parish for many years.

Vergeletto covers an area of about 40.79 square kilometers (about 15.75 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 43%, is covered by forests. About 0.5% of the land is used for farming.

  • Il nucleo: This area is at the entrance of the valley. It's a great starting point for amazing trips into the mountains, to places like the Salei, Arena, and Ribia mountain refuges.
  • The Zott-Salei Telepheric: This is an aerial tramway, like a cable car. It starts a few kilometers from the village in a place called Zott and takes you up to the Salei mountain pasture.
