Vern Fleming (born February 2, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for twelve seasons in the NBA from 1984 to 1996. During his career, he played for the Indiana Pacers and the New Jersey Nets. Before becoming a pro, he played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Vern Fleming was born in New York City, New York. He went to high school at Mater Christi in Astoria, New York. While there, he was a very talented basketball player.

College Career and Olympic Gold

As a college player, Vern Fleming attended the University of Georgia. He was a key part of the Georgia Bulldogs team. In 1984, he achieved a huge honor. He won a gold medal with the United States men's basketball team. This happened at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

After his Olympic success, Fleming began his professional career. He was chosen as the 18th player overall in the 1984 NBA draft. The Indiana Pacers picked him to join their team.

Playing in the NBA

Vern Fleming played as a point guard for the Indiana Pacers for eleven years. He often shared playing time with other great players like Haywoode Workman and Mark Jackson.

One of his best seasons was in 1990. That year, he started all 82 games for the Pacers. He also had his career-best averages. He scored 14.3 points per game and made 7.4 assists per game. On November 23, 1990, Fleming set a personal record. He made 18 assists in a game against the Houston Rockets, helping his team win 112–111.

Fleming played his final year in the NBA for the New Jersey Nets. He retired from professional basketball in 1997.
