Vern Fleming, born on February 2, 1962, is a former American professional basketball player. He played for twelve seasons in the NBA (National Basketball Association) from 1984 to 1996. During his career, he played for the Indiana Pacers and the New Jersey Nets. Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Early Life and High School

Vern Fleming was born in New York City, New York. He went to Mater Christi High School in Astoria, New York. While there, he was a very talented basketball player.

College Career and Olympic Gold

Fleming played college basketball at the University of Georgia. As a college player, he achieved a big dream. He won a gold medal with the United States men's basketball team. This happened at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. After the Olympics, he started his professional career. He was chosen as the 18th player overall in the 1984 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers.

Professional Basketball Career

Vern Fleming played as a point guard for the Indiana Pacers for eleven years. He often shared the starting role with other players like Haywoode Workman and Mark Jackson. One of his best seasons was in 1990. That year, he started all 82 games. He also had his career bests, averaging 14.3 points and 7.4 assists per game.

On November 23, 1990, Fleming set a personal record. He made 18 assists in one game. This helped the Pacers win 112–111 against the Houston Rockets. Later, on April 2, 1994, he had an accident during a game. He collided with Shaquille O'Neal while playing against the Orlando Magic. Fleming spent his last year in the NBA playing for the New Jersey Nets. He retired from basketball in 1997.
