History of Vernon
Vernon was started in 1872. It was founded by the Illinois Central Railroad company. The village was named after William Vernon, who worked as an auditor for the railway.
A famous artist named Herbert Ryman was born in Vernon. He worked for Walt Disney Studios.
Geography and Location
Vernon is found in the northwestern part of Marion County. A main road, U.S. Route 51, goes right through the village. This road leads south about 3 miles (5 km) to Patoka. It also goes north about 11 miles (18 km) to Vandalia.
The county seat of Marion County, Salem, is about 18 miles (29 km) southeast of Vernon. The village covers a total area of about 0.88 square miles (2.28 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
Waterways Near Vernon
Water from the village flows south into a small stream. This stream then joins the North Fork, which eventually flows into the Kaskaskia River. The Kaskaskia River is part of Carlyle Lake, which is about 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Vernon.
