Vernon is a small town located in Oneida County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 5,408 people lived here. The town is on the western edge of Oneida County. It also contains a smaller area called the Village of Vernon.

History of Vernon
Early Settlers and Town Formation
The first European settler to arrive in Vernon was Josiah Bushnell. He came from Berkshire County, Massachusetts, in 1794.
The town of Vernon was officially formed in 1802. It was created from parts of two other towns: Augusta and Westmoreland.
Oneida Nation and Population Changes
Vernon was originally part of the Oneida Reservation. By 1859, a small group of Oneida people still lived in the southwestern part of the town.
The population of Vernon has changed over the years. In 1920, there were 4,522 people living in the town.
Geography of Vernon
Land Area and Waterways
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Vernon covers about 38.1 square miles (98.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
A stream called Skanandoa Creek flows through the eastern part of the town. Its name means "hemlock" or "stream of hemlocks." It was named after a famous person called Skenandoa.
Town Borders
The western border of Vernon is also the border of Madison County. This border is formed by the Oneida Creek.
Communities and Places in Vernon
Vernon is home to several smaller communities and interesting places:
- Brewers Corners – This is a small hamlet found on the northern edge of the town. It is north of the main Vernon village.
- Eaton Hill – This is a hill located south of the Village of Vernon. Part of it is also in Madison County.
- Gibson Hill – Another hill, located south of Vernon Center.
- Oneida Castle – This is a village located northwest of Sherrill.
- Sconondoa – A specific location on the northern town line. It is near Oneida Castle and NY 365.
- Sherrill – This is the smallest city in New York State. It is in the western part of Vernon. Even though it's a city, it sometimes falls under Vernon's rules.
- Vernon – This is the main village located in the center of the town. It is east of Sherrill and on NY5.
- Vernon Center – A hamlet in the southeastern part of the town. It is on NY 26 and is where NY 31 ends.
- Vernon Downs – A well-known place in Vernon.
Education in Vernon
Students in Vernon attend schools operated by the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District.
There are two elementary schools:
- W.A. Wettel Elementary School is located in Vernon.
- E.A. Mcallister Elementary School is located in Sherrill.
For older students, the secondary schools are:
