Vernon Maxwell (born September 12, 1965) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played as a shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for thirteen seasons. His career spanned from the late 1980s to the early 2000s.

Maxwell played college basketball for the University of Florida. He helped lead the Florida Gators to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. The Denver Nuggets drafted him in the second round of the 1988 NBA draft. He was then traded to the San Antonio Spurs. His most successful time in the NBA was with the Houston Rockets.

People called Maxwell "Mad Max" because of his amazing three-point shots in important moments. One of his most famous shots happened in the final game of the 1994 NBA Finals. Maxwell is one of only nine players in NBA history to score 30 points in a single quarter. He achieved this while scoring 51 points in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 26, 1991.

Vernon Maxwell's Early Life and High School Basketball

Maxwell was born in Gainesville, Florida. He went to Buchholz High School in Gainesville. There, he played for the Buchholz Bobcats high school basketball team. In his senior year, Maxwell was named the Mr. Basketball of the state of Florida. He was also an all-state defensive player in football.

Vernon Maxwell's College Basketball Career

Maxwell earned a sports scholarship to attend the University of Florida. He played for coach Norm Sloan's Florida Gators men's basketball team from 1984 to 1988. As a senior, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 20.2 points per game. He still holds 15 team records for the Gators.

When he left college, he was the Gators' all-time leading scorer with 2,450 points. He was also the second-highest scorer in Southeastern Conference history. He scored more than 20 points per game in both his junior and senior seasons.

Vernon Maxwell's Professional NBA Career

On June 28, 1988, the Denver Nuggets drafted Maxwell into the NBA. They traded him to the San Antonio Spurs on the same day. Two years later, the Houston Rockets bought his contract. He became a very important player for the Rockets.

Maxwell helped the Rockets win their first championship in 1994. He was known for making clutch shots that won games. Maxwell held the NBA record for most 3-pointers made in a season from 1991 to 1993. In January 1991, he became the fourth player ever to score 30 points in one quarter. He scored 30 of his career-high 51 points in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In February 1995, Maxwell had an incident during a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He was suspended for 10 games and fined $20,000. This was a very high fine and a long suspension at the time. Maxwell was not part of the Rockets' team that won the 1995 championship. He left the team after a playoff loss in 1995. Clyde Drexler had joined the Rockets and taken Maxwell's starting spot. Maxwell has said he regrets leaving the team. The Rockets released him in June 1995.

He later signed with the Seattle SuperSonics before the 1999–2000 season. In March, he was involved in an argument with Sonics star Gary Payton. During the argument, he accidentally hit Horace Grant, causing an injury. This injury made Grant miss the next game. Before the Sonics' first playoff series, it was reported Maxwell would miss the games due to a knee injury.
