Vernon Maxwell (born September 12, 1965) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA). His career lasted for thirteen seasons. He played from the late 1980s to the early 2000s.
Maxwell played college basketball for the University of Florida. He helped the Florida Gators reach their first-ever NCAA tournament. The Denver Nuggets picked him in the 1988 NBA draft. He was then traded to the San Antonio Spurs. He played his most successful years with the Houston Rockets.
People called Maxwell "Mad Max". This nickname came from his amazing three-point shots. He made many important shots, especially in the 1994 NBA Finals. Maxwell is one of only nine NBA players to score 30 points in a single quarter. He did this on January 26, 1991, scoring 51 points against the Cleveland.

Early Life and High School Basketball
Vernon Maxwell was born in Gainesville, Florida. He went to Buchholz High School in Gainesville. There, he played for the Buchholz Bobcats basketball team.
As a senior, Maxwell was named Mr. Basketball for Florida. This award goes to the best high school basketball player in the state. He was also a top defensive player in football.
College Career with the Florida Gators
Maxwell earned a sports scholarship to the University of Florida. He played for coach Norm Sloan's Florida Gators men's basketball team. He played there from 1984 to 1988.
As a senior, he averaged 20.2 points per game. He still holds 15 team records for the Gators. He finished his college career as the Gators' all-time leading scorer. He scored 2,450 points. He was also the second-highest scorer in Southeastern Conference history. Only LSU's Pete Maravich scored more.
Maxwell scored over 20 points per game in his junior and senior years.
Professional Basketball Journey
On June 28, 1988, the Denver Nuggets drafted Maxwell into the NBA. They traded him to the San Antonio Spurs on the same day. Two years later, he joined the Houston Rockets.
He became a key player for the Rockets. He helped them win their first championship in 1994. Maxwell was known for making important shots. He hit several game-winning shots during his career. From 1991 to 1993, he held the NBA record for most three-pointers in a season.
In January 1991, he made history. He scored 30 points in one quarter. This was part of his career-high 51 points. The Rockets won 103–97 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In February 1995, Maxwell had an incident during a game. He went into the stands against the Portland Trail Blazers. He was suspended for 10 games and fined $20,000. This was a large fine at the time.
Maxwell left the Rockets after a loss in the 1995 playoffs. Clyde Drexler had joined the team. Drexler took over Maxwell's starting spot. Maxwell has said he regrets leaving the team. The Rockets released him in June 1995.
He later signed with the Seattle SuperSonics in 1999. In March, he was involved in a team argument. He accidentally hit Horace Grant, injuring his shoulder. Grant missed the next game. Before the playoffs, it was reported Maxwell would miss games due to a knee injury.
