Born 1960

Vessna Perunovich is a visual artist born in Yugoslavia. She now lives and works in both Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Belgrade, Serbia. She creates many different kinds of art.

Vessna was born in 1960 in a town called Zaječar in Serbia. Her father was from Montenegro, and her mother was from Serbia, born in North Macedonia. In 1988, Vessna moved to Toronto with her husband and daughter.

Her Journey to Becoming an Artist

Vessna studied art at the University of Belgrade in Yugoslavia. She earned her first art degree in 1984. She then got her master's degree in fine arts from the same university in 1987.

After moving to Canada, Vessna continued her art career. In 2004, she was invited to give a special talk at the University of Guelph in Ontario. That same year, she joined an artist program in Banff, Alberta. There, she created new art and shared her work with others.

From 2005 to 2011, Vessna taught art at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. She often gives presentations about her art. Her most recent one was at the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade in 2023. She also gave a presentation in Havana, Cuba, for an international artist event.

What Kind of Art Does Vessna Make?

Vessna Perunovich is known for using many different art forms. She creates sculptures, paintings, and drawings. She also makes video installations, which are art pieces that use video and often fill a room. She even does performance art and creates unique artist books.

  • Sculpture: Art you can see from all sides, often made from different materials.
  • Painting: Creating images using paint on a surface.
  • Drawing: Making pictures with pencils, charcoal, or other tools.
  • Video Installation: Art that uses video screens or projections, often set up in a space for viewers to walk through.
  • Performance Art: Art where the artist uses their body or actions as the artwork.
  • Artist Books: Books created as artworks themselves, not just for reading.

Vessna often combines these different art forms in her exhibitions. This is called an interdisciplinary installation. It means she brings together various types of art to create one big experience for the viewer.

Her Unique Materials

Vessna likes to use simple and unusual materials in her art. She tries to say a lot with only a few things. For her sculptures and installations, she uses everyday items like pantyhose, nylon, rubber bands, and zip-ties.

One of her most famous materials is pantyhose. She uses them to show how society tries to control us. The pantyhose can represent rules or expectations that might stop us from reaching our dreams. Vessna has even filled pantyhose with objects. This stretches the material to its limits, showing how we might feel pushed to our own limits.

Vessna's art often comes from her own experiences. But her work also connects to feelings and memories that many people share. She uses her materials to create imaginative shapes that look like parts of the body. Through her art, she explores different feelings, like pleasure and pain.
