Early Leaders: Deputy Chief of State (1826–1838)
Before the Vice President role, Nicaragua had a "Deputy Head of State." This position was first mentioned in the Constitution of 1826. The Deputy Head of State helped the Head of State make important decisions.
However, this role was removed in the Constitution of 1838. If the Head of State's position became empty, a member of the Senate would be chosen to take over.
History of the Vice President Role
The job of Vice President has officially existed in Nicaragua at four different times in history:
- 1893 to 1896: During the time of the Liberal Constitution. President Zelaya ended the position in 1896. Instead, he created a system where three "Presidential Designates" were chosen each year by the National Congress of Nicaragua.
- 1911 to 1939: Under the Conservative Constitution.
- 1962 to 1972: This period followed changes to the Constitution made by Luis Somoza Debayle in 1962 and René Schick in 1966.
- After 1987: The role returned with the new Constitution of 1987.
Gen. Anastasio Ortiz was the very first Vice President. He was chosen by a special assembly. The system for the Vice President to take over from the President worked in 1923. This happened when President Diego Manuel Chamorro was replaced by Bartolomé Martínez.
From 1987 until 2025, Vice Presidents were elected at the same time as the President. They ran together as a team.
