What the Vice President Does
The Vice President helps the President lead the country. They work closely with the President on important decisions. If the President cannot do their job, the Vice President steps in. This ensures the government always has a leader.
History of the Vice President Role
The job of Vice President has been part of Nicaragua's government at different times.
Early Leaders (1826–1838)
Long ago, Nicaragua was part of a bigger group of countries. Like other places, it had a "Head of State" and a "Deputy Head of State." The Deputy Head of State was first mentioned in the country's rules in 1826. This person helped make big decisions. In 1838, this role was changed. If the top leader was not there, a member of the Senate would take over.
When the Vice President Position Existed
The official job of "Vice President of the Republic" has been used four times in Nicaragua's history:
- From 1893 to 1896, during a time called the Liberal Constitution. President José Santos Zelaya later removed this job. He created a system where three people were chosen each year to help the President.
- From 1911 to 1939, during the Conservative Constitution.
- From 1962 to 1972, after some changes to the country's rules by Luis Somoza Debayle and René Schick.
- Since 1987, with the newest Constitution.
The first Vice President was Gen. Anastasio Ortiz. He was chosen by a special group that wrote the country's rules. One example of the Vice President taking over was in 1923. President Diego Manuel Chamorro was replaced by Bartolomé Martínez.
