Rosario Murillo: Early Life and Education
Rosario Murillo was born in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. Her father, Teódulo Murillo Molina, was involved in farming. Her mother, Zoilamérica Zambrana Sandino, was related to General Augusto César Sandino. Sandino was a famous Nicaraguan hero who fought against foreign occupation.
Murillo attended school at Colegio Teresiano in Managua, which was a Catholic school for girls. She also studied in Great Britain at Greenway Convent Collegiate School and art in Switzerland at the Institut Anglo-Suisse Le Manoir. She learned to speak English and French, earning certificates from the University of Cambridge. She also studied at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua.
Joining the Sandinista Movement
In 1969, Murillo joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). This was a political group working for change in Nicaragua. She helped the Sandinista fighters by offering them a safe place to stay in her home in Managua.
In the early 1970s, Murillo worked as a secretary for a newspaper called La Prensa. She worked for important Nicaraguan writers and political figures. She was arrested in 1976 because of her political activities. After this, she lived in Panama and Venezuela for a short time.
Later, she moved to Costa Rica, where she focused completely on her political work with the FSLN. She helped start Radio Sandino, a radio station for the movement. It was in Costa Rica that she met Daniel Ortega, who would later become her husband. They married in 2005. When the Sandinistas took power in 1979, she returned to Nicaragua.
Political Career and Roles
Rosario Murillo began to gain more political influence around 1998. Her husband, Daniel Ortega, was elected president in 2006 and again in 2011.
In the 2016 election, Murillo ran alongside Ortega as his candidate for vice president. Many people saw her as a very powerful figure in the government. She was sworn in as Vice President on January 10, 2017.
During her time as Vice President, Nicaragua experienced a period of public protests. These events led to challenges for the country. The government also faced concerns from international groups regarding human rights.
Becoming Co-President
In November 2024, President Ortega suggested changes to the Nicaraguan constitution. These changes would extend the presidential term from five to six years. They also proposed that Rosario Murillo be declared co-president.
These new measures were approved by the National Assembly. They officially became law on January 30, 2025, making Murillo the co-president of Nicaragua.
