Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People facts for kids
The Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People, often called the Vicky, is a special award given every year. It celebrates Canadian writers or illustrators whose books have truly inspired young people in Canada. It's a very important honour for those who create children's books in Canada.
Vicky Metcalf was a Canadian librarian. She started this award in 1963 to encourage people to write great books for Canadian kids. Before 2013, the award was known as the Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Literature. The Metcalf Foundation helps fund the award. Their goal is to help people and groups work together to create a fair, healthy, and creative society in Canada. In 2002, the Writers' Trust of Canada took over managing the award from the Canadian Authors Association.
To be considered for the award, a writer or illustrator must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. They also need to have published at least four English-language children's books. Plus, they must have released at least one new book in the last three years. Three people form a jury to choose the winner. The winner receives $25,000 Canadian dollars.
