Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People facts for kids
The Vicky Metcalf Award for Literature for Young People, often called the Vicky, is a special award given each year. It's part of the Writers' Trust Awards and celebrates a writer or illustrator whose books have really inspired young people in Canada. It's considered a top honour for Canadian children's writers and Canadian children's book illustrators.
Vicky Metcalf, who was a librarian in Canada, started this award in 1963. Her goal was to encourage more people to write wonderful books for Canadian kids. Before 2013, the award was known as the Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Literature. The Metcalf Foundation helps support the award. This foundation works to help Canadians create a fair, healthy, and creative society. In 2002, the Writers' Trust of Canada took over running the award from the Canadian Authors Association.
To win this award, writers or illustrators need to be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. They must have published at least four children's books in English. Also, they need to have released at least one new book in the last three years. A group of three judges chooses the winners. The winner gets $25,000 Canadian dollars!
