The Victor S. Blundon Monument is a special stone artwork from 1936. An unknown artist created it. You can find it at Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, D.C., United States. This monument is the final resting place for the Blundon family. Experts from the Smithsonian looked at it in 1994 as part of a project called "Save Outdoor Sculpture!".

What the Monument Looks Like

This gravestone has a cool carving called a relief. It shows Victor S. Blundon sitting on the ground with his dog right beside him. Victor is wearing a suit and tie. His left arm rests on his left knee. His right arm is around his dog, who sits close to him.

The front of the sculpture clearly says:

VICTOR
BLUNDON

Other family members' names and dates are also carved into the sides and back of the monument. These include Caroline A. Hyam, Bessie C. Behrens, Charles A. Schnebel, Emma A. Schnebel, Francis A. Blundon, Mary C. Blundon, F. Edward Blundon, Robert B. Blundon, S. Beulah Findley, Gertrude W. Blundon, and Minnie A. Asquith. The family name "BLUNDON" is carved on the center back.

About the Blundon Family

The Blundon family has an interesting history in Washington, D.C. Charles Schnebel and his wife, Emma, were born in Prussia. They owned a restaurant in Washington. They were the parents of Caroline Hyam and Mary Blundon.

Frances Blundon: A Builder in D.C.

Frances Blundon was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1867. He learned to be a carpenter. This training helped him become a successful home builder. Starting in 1892, his company built about 700 homes in D.C. in just ten years! He often worked with his brother, Joseph. They lived together with other family members in their Georgetown home.

On January 5, 1893, Frances married Mary Schnebel. She was born in Virginia in 1873. They had two sons, Francis Edward and Victor Sylvester. Both sons later became salesmen for their father's building company.

Frances Blundon built many houses, especially in the Northwest area of Washington. This included neighborhoods like Bloomingdale. His brother, Robert Blundon, also worked in real estate. The family later moved to a large farm in Forest Glen, Maryland, in 1918. They continued to live there into the 1930s. This farm was on Georgia Avenue. The monument shows Victor Blundon with his beloved Irish setter dog.

The Monument's Condition

In 1994, experts checked the condition of this sculpture. They found it was "well maintained," meaning it was in good shape.
