Victoria's History and Beginnings
Victoria was officially started on January 22, 1886. It grew up along the BNSF Railway, which was important for travel and trade. By 1900, Victoria was a small but active place. It had about 30 residents, a church, and a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that quickly separates cotton fibers from their seeds. This was very important for farmers in the area.
Train Accident in 1925
In 1925, a sad event happened near Victoria. The Sunnyland passenger train was approaching the community when it went off its tracks. The train fell down a steep bank. This accident resulted in the loss of 20 lives.
Where is Victoria Located?
Victoria is found in the northwestern part of Marshall County, Mississippi. A main road, Mississippi Highway 178, goes right through the community. If you travel northwest on this highway, you'll reach Byhalia in about 4 miles. Going southeast for about 11 miles will take you to Holly Springs, which is the main town of the county.
Highways and Nearby Cities
Interstate 22 also runs along the south side of Victoria. You can get onto I-22 from Exit 18, which is Victoria Road. This interstate highway connects Victoria to bigger cities. Traveling southeast on I-22, you can reach Tupelo in about 70 miles. If you head northwest, you'll get to the Memphis, Tennessee, area. Downtown Memphis is about 35 miles northwest of Victoria.
Land and Water Around Victoria
The area of Victoria, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, covers about 7.37 square miles. Most of this area is land, with only a very small part (about 0.01 square miles) being water. A stream called Barrow Creek flows through the southern part of Victoria. This creek eventually flows into Byhalia Creek. Byhalia Creek is a branch of the Coldwater River, which is part of the larger Tallahatchie River system.
