Viktoria Aleksandrovna Komova (born January 30, 1995) is a former Russian artistic gymnast. She is famous for her beautiful and flowing style. Viktoria won two silver medals at the 2012 London Olympics. These were for the team event and the all-around competition.

She also became a world champion on the uneven bars in 2011 and again in 2015. When she was a junior gymnast, she won many gold medals at the 2010 Youth Olympics. These included the all-around, uneven bars, and vault titles.

Early Life

Viktoria Komova was born in Voronezh, Russia. Her parents, Vera Kolesnikova and Alexander Komov, were also successful gymnasts. Her mother won a gold medal at the World Championships. She was also the all-around champion at the 1986 Goodwill Games. Viktoria has an older brother named Alexander.

Junior Gymnastics Career

Viktoria started gymnastics when she was five years old. Her mother was her first coach for three years. When Viktoria was seven, Gennady Yelfimov became her coach. She once said, "Now, gymnastics is my life. I can't imagine my life without it."

Early Junior Competitions

In December 2007, Viktoria competed in her first big junior event. This was the Voronin Memorial Cup. She won first place on both vault and floor exercise.

In 2008, she competed at the WOGA Classic in Texas. She finished third in the individual all-around. Later that year, she was also third in the all-around at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships. She won many medals at the 2008 Voronin Memorial Cup.

Winning Gold Medals

In July 2009, Viktoria competed at the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival in Finland. She won three gold medals there. These were for the individual all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam. She had similar success at the Junior Japan International Competition. She won the all-around and uneven bars and balance beam events.

Youth Olympic Games Success

In March 2010, Viktoria won the all-around title at the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Championships. In April, she helped the Russian team win gold at the European Championships. She also won the all-around final and the vault event.

In August 2010, Viktoria competed at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. She felt a lot of pressure as the only Russian gymnast. She hoped to win a gold medal. She succeeded, winning the all-around competition. She also won gold on vault and uneven bars. She earned a bronze medal on floor exercise.

Senior Gymnastics Career

2011: World Championships Debut

In February 2011, Viktoria re-injured her ankle. She had surgery in May to fix it. She started training again in July.

In August, she competed at the Russian Cup. She finished second in the all-around. She won first place on uneven bars and balance beam. In October, Viktoria competed at the World Championships in Japan. She helped the Russian team win a silver medal. She also won a silver medal in the all-around final. She said her vault and beam routines had mistakes. She then won a gold medal on the uneven bars.

2012: Olympic Achievements

In May 2012, Viktoria competed at the European Championships in Belgium. She helped her team win a silver medal. She also won a gold medal on the uneven bars. In June, she won the all-around competition at the Russian Cup.

In July 2012, Viktoria competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She qualified in first place for the all-around final. In the team final, she helped Russia win a silver medal. In the individual all-around final, she won another silver medal. She was proud but also a little sad she didn't get gold. She had some small mistakes on vault and beam.

In the uneven bars final, she finished fifth. In the balance beam final, she placed eighth after falling twice. After the Olympics, she felt unlucky. She wasn't sure if she would continue gymnastics.

2013-2014: Dealing with Injuries

Viktoria took a break from competitions in 2013 due to a back injury. She hoped to return for the University Games. However, she was diagnosed with viral meningitis later that year. This prevented her from competing.

She returned to competition in April 2014 at the Russian Championships. She helped her team win first place. But she had a fall on uneven bars. Days later, she had surgery on her right ankle again. This kept her from competing at the World Championships.

2015: Return to World Stage

In June 2015, Viktoria returned to big international competitions. She competed at the European Games in Azerbaijan. Her team won the gold medal.

In September, she competed at the Russian Cup. She helped her team win a silver medal. Later, she was chosen for the World Championships in Scotland. She was a specialist on vault, uneven bars, and balance beam. In the uneven bars final, she tied for first place with three other gymnasts. This was a very rare four-way tie for gold!

2016-2018: More Challenges and Comeback

Viktoria was named to the 2016 Olympic team. However, she had to withdraw because of severe back pain. Doctors found a stress fracture in her back. She had to rest for six months.

She returned to training in 2017. In December, she competed at the Voronin Cup. She finished second in the all-around. In 2018, she competed at the Russian National Championships. She finished third in the all-around. She also placed third at the Russian Cup.

Retirement and Later Life

After a short comeback, rumors began that Viktoria had retired. She confirmed this on her Instagram. However, she then said she would continue training. In January 2019, her name was not on the National Team roster. This again suggested she had retired. She was seen commentating at the Russian National Championships instead of competing.

In September 2019, she announced she would move to Rostov-on-Don. She planned to work as a recreational gymnastics coach. In April 2020, she officially confirmed her retirement. In May 2020, she was asked to become a gymnastics judge. In June 2022, Viktoria married Valery Gorshkov, an ice hockey player. They welcomed a child in May 2023.
