Villa Aberastain is a city in Argentina. It is located in the San Juan Province. This city is the main town of the Pocito Department. It also serves as the center for the local government.

Villa Aberastain is found in the area known as the Valley of Tulum. This valley is a major farming region. About 90% of the province's people live here. The city is about 15 kilometers from the mountains. A main road, National Route 40, passes nearby. This road connects Villa Aberastain to the provincial capital and the city of Mendoza.

Economy and Farming

The economy of Villa Aberastain mainly relies on farming. People here grow vegetables and fruit. They also produce wine. Some of these farm products are processed in local factories.

Farming is possible thanks to irrigation. Water comes from several channels. The most important one is the Cespedes channel. Most farms are small, family-run plots.

Population Growth

In 2001, Villa Aberastain had 8,946 people. This was a big increase from 6,578 people in 1991. The population grew by 36% in ten years.

Villa Aberastain is part of a larger urban area. It joins with the nearby town of La Rinconada. Together, they form a city area called Aberastain - La Rinconada. This combined area had 11,879 people in 2001. It is the fourth largest urban area in the San Juan Province.

Villa Aberastain looks modern. Its streets are well-planned and paved. The sidewalks are wide and have mosaic designs. Many trees like banana trees and mulberry trees line the streets.

The main streets are important for the city. Antonino Aberastain Avenue is a busy street. Many shops and businesses are located here. Marcos Zalasar Avenue is also known as "Calle 11". It has a new and attractive boulevard.

The city's main square has a special landmark. It is a copy of the Statue of Liberty. This statue is 4 meters tall. France gave the original statue to Buenos Aires. But for some reason, this copy ended up in Villa Aberastain.

  • Freedom Square: This is the city's largest green space. It was recently updated. It has colorful plants and play areas for children. There are also several statues. These include a statue of Mariana India, a local indigenous woman. The Statue of Liberty replica is also here.
  • Parish Church: The church has a unique design. It is square-shaped and very modern. Inside, it holds the image of Santa Barbara. She is the patron saint of the department. Special celebrations happen in December for her.
  • City Hall: This building is next to the main square. It is where the city's mayor and local government work. It also has a modern design and is well-kept. The Civil Registry office is located here too.

Public transport in Villa Aberastain uses bus lines. Several companies operate these buses. Empresa Mayo connects the city to San Juan. It also links to other areas in the Pocito Department, like La Rinconada.

Another company, Nuevo Sur, connects Villa Aberastain to Village Media Agua. El Triunfo company runs a line to the Médano de Oro District and Villa Krause. Taxis are also available throughout the city.
