Viroinval is a municipality in Wallonia, Belgium. It is located in the province of Namur.

On January 1, 2006, Viroinval had about 5,680 people living there. The total area of the municipality is 120.90 square kilometers. This means there are about 47 people living in each square kilometer.

Viroinval is made up of several smaller villages. These are called districts. They include Dourbes, Mazée, Le Mesnil, Nismes, Oignies-en-Thiérache, Olloy-sur-Viroin, Treignes, and Vierves-sur-Viroin.

The name Viroinval means "Viroin River Valley." It was chosen in 1977. This was when eight villages joined together to form the municipality.

Fun Places to Visit in Viroinval

The Center of Europe

Monument for the geographical centre of the EU until its May 2004 expansion

From 1995 to 2004, Viroinval was a very special place. It was the geographical centre of the European Union. This spot was in Oignies-en-Thiérache. There is a monument there to mark this important location.

However, the European Union grew bigger. On May 1, 2004, the EU added ten new countries. Because of this, the center of the EU moved. It shifted east to a village in Germany. Then, on January 1, 2007, it moved again.

Steam Train Adventures

Viroinval is home to a fun tourist steam train line. This train travels between Mariembourg and Treignes. Many of its stations are in Viroinval villages. You can hop on or off in Nismes, Olloy-sur-Viroin, Vierves-sur-Viroin, and Treignes.

The village of Treignes also has an interesting museum. It is related to the train line and the area's history.
