Visionary facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A visionary is someone who can imagine or see things that others might not, often about the future. This can involve new ideas, creative thoughts, or even spiritual experiences. Visionaries often have a strong sense of purpose and can inspire others with their unique way of seeing the world.

People can experience visionary states through different ways, like meditation, lucid dreams (where you know you're dreaming), daydreams, or by creating art. Throughout history, many famous people have been called visionaries. For example, Hildegard of Bingen was a 12th-century artist and Catholic saint known for her spiritual visions. Other religious visionaries include Mohammed, who had a vision of the Angel Gabriel, St. Bernadette, who saw the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Joseph Smith, who had a vision of the Angel Moroni.

Visionary Art

Visionary art is a type of art created by artists who use their unique visions or dreams as inspiration. This art often looks bright and glowing, or it might use special artistic methods that make the viewer look very closely and think deeply.

Some famous visionary artists include Gustave Moreau, Samuel Palmer, Jean Delville, Ernst Fuchs, Odilon Redon (a French Symbolist artist), Brion Gysin, Max Ernst, Stanley Spencer, Edward Burne Jones, Adolf Wolfli, Fred Sandback, William Blake, Hieronymus Bosch, and Henry Darger.

Sometimes, visionary art is mistakenly thought of as "primitive art," which means art made by people who haven't had formal training. However, visionary art is really about artists who use their inner visions to create their paintings. A great example is Salvador Dali, whose visionary art is neither religious nor "primitive" in the sense of lacking training.
