Vitry-sur-Seine is a town located in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is about 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) away from the very center of Paris. A "commune" is like a local government area, similar to a city or town.

What's in a Name?

Vitry-sur-Seine was first simply called Vitry. The name Vitry comes from an old Latin word, Victoriacum. This word meant "Victorius's estate," referring to a landowner from long ago. In 1897, the town officially added "sur-Seine" to its name. This means "upon Seine" and helps people tell it apart from other towns in France also named Vitry.
