Volcano or Volcano Village is a small community in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). In 2010, about 2,575 people lived there. This was an increase from 2,231 people in 2000. Volcano is located near the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Exploring Volcano, Hawaii

Volcano is found on the eastern side of the island of Hawaiʻi, also known as the Big Island. It sits right next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The community is also close to the edge of Kīlauea's summit caldera. A caldera is a large, bowl-shaped hollow that forms after a volcano erupts and the ground collapses.

Size and Location

The area of Volcano is about 151.7 square kilometers (58.6 square miles). All of this area is land. Hawaii Route 11 is a main road that goes through the southern part of Volcano. This road leads northeast about 27 miles (43 km) to Hilo. It also goes southwest about 37 miles (60 km) to Nāʻālehu.

Volcano's Climate

Volcano has a special type of weather called a subtropical highland climate. This means the temperatures stay pretty much the same all year. It also gets a lot of rain, especially from November to April. The elevation in Volcano changes quite a bit. It ranges from below 2,800 feet (850 meters) in the southeast to over 6,200 feet (1,900 meters) in the northern parts.
