Volkan Bozkır (born 22 November 1950) is a Turkish diplomat and politician. He served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly from 2020 to 2021. He was also the Minister for European Union Affairs in Turkey from 2014 to 2016. He was the first Turkish diplomat to hold the important role of President of the UN General Assembly.

Volkan Bozkır was born in Ankara, Turkey. He studied law at Ankara University. He is fluent in both English and French.

Career Highlights

Volkan Bozkır has had a long career in diplomacy and politics. He served as a Member of Parliament for İstanbul from 2011 to 2023.

He held the position of Minister for European Union Affairs twice. First, from August 2014 to August 2015, and then again from November 2015 to May 2016. During these times, he also worked as the Chief Negotiator for Turkish Accession to the European Union. This meant he led talks about Turkey possibly joining the European Union.

In June 2020, he was chosen to be the President of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations. This was a big moment as he was the only candidate and received support from 178 UN member states. He took on this role in September 2020.
