Waarschoot (pronounced like WAHR-shoot) is a town in Belgium. It is located in the Flemish part of the country. Waarschoot is part of the East Flanders province.
For a long time, Waarschoot was its own separate area with its own local government. This kind of area is called a municipality. In 2018, about 7,967 people lived there. The total size of Waarschoot was about 21.91 square kilometers.
Waarschoot's Government History
Until the end of 2018, Waarschoot had a special leader. Its mayor was a woman named Ann Coopman. She was one of the few female mayors in Belgium at that time. A mayor is like the main boss of a town or city.
On January 1, 2019, something big happened. Waarschoot joined with two other nearby towns. These towns were Lovendegem and Zomergem. They all became one new, bigger municipality called Lievegem.
Now, the new municipality of Lievegem has one mayor. His name is Tony Vermeire. This change helped the towns work together more easily.
