Wabasso is a city in Redwood County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 696 at the 2010 census.

History

Wabasso was platted in 1889. Wabasso is a name derived from the Ojibwe language meaning "Rabbit". The city was incorporated in 1900. A post office called Wabasso has been in operation since 1900.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.86 square miles (2.23 km2), all of it land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 696 people, 282 households, and 181 families living in the city. The population density was 809.3 inhabitants per square mile (312.5/km2). There were 308 housing units at an average density of 358.1 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.4% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.

There were 282 households, of which 29.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.8% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.97.

The median age in the city was 43.7 years. 23.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.3% were from 25 to 44; 24.6% were from 45 to 64; and 23.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.3% male and 51.7% female.

Knowledge Bowl

Knowledge Bowl is a question-based competition in the state of Minnesota. The first round is a test taken by five of the team members to find out their ranking based upon their score. The written round is usually followed by four oral rounds in which four of the team members participate. In 2018 the Wabasso Knowledge Bowl team, nicknamed the Killer Rabbits of Caerbannog in reference to the Monty Python and the Holy Grail character, went to the State Competition, making them the smallest school in the state to ever do so.
