Walden is a small, unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town. It's located about 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Cottage Grove. Walden is found near where the Row River and Mosby Creek meet.

History of Walden

Walden used to be a stop on the Oregon and Southeastern Railroad. This old railway line has now been turned into a fun path called the Row River Trail. A local lumber company owner, L. L. "Stub" Stewart, said the station was named after an early family who lived in the area. Records from the 1880 Census show a Nathan B. Walden living near Cottage Grove.

Did you know a movie was filmed here? The 1973 film Emperor of the North was shot in the Walden area, right along the old train tracks!

Historic Bridges and Buildings

The Brumbaugh covered bridge was once a famous landmark near Walden. It was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it was a very important historical site. This bridge crossed Mosby Creek. However, it was taken apart, and its wood was used to build the Centennial Covered Bridge in Cottage Grove.

Even though the Brumbaugh bridge is gone, two other historic bridges are still standing in the Walden area: the Stewart Bridge and the Mosby Creek Bridge. You can also see the old Walden Store & Gas Station building. This building was built around 1900 and is a piece of history itself, though the store closed around 2002.

Notable People from Walden

The writer Opal Whiteley lived in Walden with her grandparents. She wrote about the area in her famous book, The Diary of Opal Whiteley.
