Discovering Walton, Oregon
Walton is a quiet place in Oregon, known for its history tied to a local stream. It's a stop along a major route that connects different parts of the state.
How Walton Got Its Name
The story of Walton's name began with a road. In 1881, work started on what is now Oregon Route 126. This road crossed the Oregon Coast Range mountains. Near a place called Noti, the road followed a stream. This stream was a branch of the Siuslaw River.
The stream was named Walton Creek. It was named after a man named Joshua J. Walton. He was a pioneer lawyer, which means he was one of the first lawyers in the area. Joshua Walton also served as a county judge and a regent for the University of Oregon. A regent is someone who helps manage a university.
In 1884, a post office was opened in the area. A post office is where mail is sent and received. The first postmaster, James L. Atkinson, named the post office "Walton" after the creek. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
Later, after the year 1900, the name of Walton Creek was changed. It became known as Wildcat Creek.
