History of Noti
The Noti post office opened in 1913. Before that, the area was called "Portola." The first postmaster, H.G. Suttle, shared a story about how Noti got its name. He said a Native American person once shouted "no tie!" in frustration. This happened when a white man didn't tie up a horse as asked. Instead, the man rode the horse away to Eugene, leaving the Native American behind.
The Sailor Pioneer cemetery in Noti has many graves from the first settlers. These pioneers started arriving in the area around 1850.
The Little Blue School
The Noti Grade School, often called "The Little Blue School," was a local landmark. It was built in 1927. Sadly, the school closed its doors in 2002.
The school used to be right on Oregon Route 126. But in 1996, the highway was moved. Now, the school is on a quiet road called "Noti Loop Road." The main highway passes just behind it.
Geography of Noti
Noti is located on the western edge of the southern Willamette Valley. Nearby communities include Elmira and Veneta. The Fern Ridge Reservoir is between these rural areas and the city of Eugene. The community of Crow is just south of Noti.
Rivers and Waterways
The Long Tom River flows through Noti. This river starts in the eastern part of the coast range. When it reaches Noti, the river turns east. It then flows into the Fern Ridge Reservoir. Eventually, the Long Tom River empties into the Willamette River in two different places.
Noti's Climate
Noti has a climate with warm, dry summers. The average monthly temperatures during summer don't go above 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of weather is known as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate.
Economy and Industries
Lumber operations began in Noti in 1922. That's when the Forcia and Larsen Mill was built west of Noti. This first mill unfortunately burned down in 1946.
Current Lumber Mills
Today, two lumber mills operate in Noti. Swanson Brothers is the older of the two. It started its operations in 1937. Another mill, Swanson-Superior Forest Products, began working in 1973. This mill specializes in processing smaller logs. It is now owned by Seneca Sawmill and is known as Seneca Noti.
The Coos Bay Rail Link is a railroad that helps transport goods for the Swanson-Superior Mill.
