Wales took part in the 2018 Commonwealth Games! These exciting games happened in Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4 to April 15, 2018. This was the 21st time Wales had competed in the Commonwealth Games, showing up at every event since they first began in 1930.

A talented swimmer named Jazz Carlin had the special honor of carrying the Welsh flag during the opening ceremony.

Wales sent a big team of 213 athletes to the games! They competed in 16 different sports. Here's a quick look at how many athletes were in each sport:

Medal Winners for Wales

Wales had an amazing performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, bringing home a total of 36 medals! This included 10 gold, 12 silver, and 14 bronze medals.

Here are the athletes who won medals for Wales:

Athletics: Running, Jumping, and Throwing

Team Wales had 26 athletes competing in athletics. This included 14 men and 12 women. They showed great strength in various events.

  • Olivia Breen won a gold medal in the Women's long jump (T38) and a bronze medal in the Women's 100 metres (T38).
  • Hollie Arnold earned a gold medal in the Women's javelin throw (F46).
  • Melissa Courtney took home a bronze medal in the Women's 1500 metres.
  • Bethan Davies also won a bronze medal in the Women's 20 kilometres walk.

Boxing: Punching for Medals

Wales sent 7 boxers to the games: 4 men and 3 women. They fought hard and brought back some impressive medals!

  • Sammy Lee won a gold medal in the Men's light heavyweight category.
  • Lauren Price also secured a gold medal in the Women's middleweight event.
  • Rosie Eccles earned a silver medal in the Women's welterweight division.
  • Mickey McDonagh won a bronze medal in the Men's lightweight category.

Cycling: Speed on Two Wheels

Wales had 21 cyclists competing in road, track, and mountain bike events. They raced with incredible speed and skill.

  • Elinor Barker won a gold medal in the Women's points race on the track.
  • Jon Mould earned a silver medal in the Men's road race.
  • Para-cyclist James Ball, with pilot Peter Mitchell, won two silver medals in the Men's tandem 1 km time trial B and Men's tandem sprint B.
  • Lewis Oliva also won a silver medal in the Men's keirin event.
  • Dani Rowe took home a bronze medal in the Women's road race.

Diving: Graceful Jumps

Aidan Heslop was the only diver representing Wales, a special moment as he was the first Welsh diver in 20 years at the Commonwealth Games. He competed in the 3 metre springboard and 10 metre platform events.

Gymnastics: Strength and Style

Wales had 13 gymnasts (5 men and 8 women) showing off their amazing routines in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics.

  • In artistic gymnastics, Latalia Bevan won a silver medal in the Women's floor exercise.
  • In rhythmic gymnastics, Laura Halford earned a silver medal in the Women's hoop event.

Hockey: Team Play on the Field

Both the Welsh men's and women's hockey teams qualified for the games, each with 18 players. They faced tough competition in their pools.

Lawn Bowls: Rolling to Victory

Wales had 17 lawn bowlers and their directors competing. They showed great precision and teamwork.

  • Daniel Salmon and Marc Wyatt won a gold medal in the Men's pairs event.
  • Laura Daniels earned a silver medal in the Women's singles.
  • In the mixed para-sport pairs, Gilbert Miles (with director Byron John) and Julie Thomas (with director John Wilson) won a bronze medal.

Netball: Fast-Paced Action

Wales sent a netball team of 12 women to compete. They played hard in their pool matches.

Wales sent 11 shooters (8 men and 3 women) to compete. They showed great focus and precision.

Triathlon: Swim, Bike, Run

Wales had 4 triathletes (2 men and 2 women) who competed in individual and mixed relay events. Triathlon is a tough sport that combines swimming, cycling, and running.

Weightlifting: Lifting Heavy for Wales

  • Gareth Evans won a gold medal in the Men's 69 kg weightlifting event.
  • Laura Hughes earned a bronze medal in the Women's 75 kg weightlifting.
