Walter Carleton Monegan III (born in May 1951) is an American leader. He served as the Police Chief for Anchorage, Alaska. Later, he became the Commissioner of Public Safety for Alaska. This role means he was in charge of keeping people safe across the state.
In 2008, he left his role as Commissioner of Public Safety. This event received a lot of attention. In 2016, Alaska Governor Bill Walker again chose Monegan for the Commissioner of Public Safety job.
Early Life and Background
Walter Carleton Monegan III was born in Seattle, Washington. This was in May 1951. His parents were Elizabeth Hickling and Walter Carleton Monegan Jr.. Sadly, Monegan never met his father. His father died bravely in the Korean War in 1950. He was only 19 years old. His father later received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions.
Monegan grew up in a small village called Nyac. This village is in rural Southwest Alaska. He has shared that he is part Irish and part Alaska Native. His Native Alaskan heritage includes both Tlingit and Yupik roots. After finishing high school, he attended Alaska Methodist University for a year. In 1970, he joined the Marine Corps.
Family Life
Monegan is married to Terryene Mihara. They live in Chugiak, a town near Anchorage. Together, they have four adult children from their previous marriages.
Running for Mayor
In December 2008, Monegan announced he would run for Mayor of Anchorage. The campaign started in January 2009. When the votes were counted, Monegan received 8.73% of the votes. He finished in fourth place.
