Sir Walter Roper Lawrence (born February 9, 1857 – died May 25, 1940) was an important British official and writer. He worked for the British government in British India and wrote books about his travels there. He was also a member of the Council of India, which helped govern the country.
During his journeys, he grew to care deeply about the people of India and Kashmir. They are a big part of his writings. His most famous books are The Valley of Kashmir (published in 1895) and The India we Served (published in 1929).
Walter Roper Lawrence was born in Moreton-on-Lugg, England. His parents were George Lawrence and Catherine Lewis. He married Lilian Gertrude James in 1885.

Sir Walter's Work in India
Walter Lawrence worked for the British government in India from 1879 to 1895. This was called the Indian Civil Service. He was chosen to be the Settlement Commissioner for Jammu and Kashmir between 1889 and 1894. This was during the rule of Maharaja Pratap Singh.
Exploring Kashmir
While traveling in Kashmir, Lawrence wrote down what he saw and learned. He created a short history about the land, the culture of the people, and the challenges they faced under the local rulers. During his time in the Kashmir Valley, he wrote the first complete encyclopedia about Kashmir. This book was called The Valley of Kashmir.
Working with Important Leaders
In 1896, Lawrence left the Indian Civil Service. However, he was soon asked to return by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. A Viceroy was like the highest British official in India. Lawrence worked as Lord Curzon's private secretary from 1899 to 1903.
He also traveled with the Prince and Princess of Wales (who later became King George V and Queen Mary) when they visited India in 1905-1906. Lawrence was their Chief of Staff for this trip.
In 1907, he became a member of the Council of India. This group helped the British government make decisions about India. During World War I, he worked on different important tasks for Lord Kitchener, who was in charge of the army. In 1918, he worked with the Indian Air Force as a Major General.
In 1919, Lawrence was part of a British group that went to Palestine and Syria.
His Books
As a writer, his most important books are The Valley of Kashmir (1895) and The India we Served (1929).
Lawrence was one of the first people to write about the difficulties faced by the people of Kashmir. This was during the time of the Dogra dynasty rulers.
Later Life and Death
Sir Walter Roper Lawrence passed away on May 25, 1940, at the age of 83. His grandson was Murray Lawrence.
