War Party was a cool hip-hop group from Hobbema, Alberta. They were Cree musicians. The group started with Rex Smallboy and Ryan Small. Other members included Cynthia, Karmen "Hellnback" Omeasoo, Bryan Omeosoo, and Tom Crier. Their music mixed rap beats with stories and ideas from Indigenous cultures.

The Story of War Party

War Party began in 1995. It was started by Rex Smallboy and Ryan Small. Later, three more people joined the group.

Big Wins and Firsts

In 2001, War Party won a special award. They received the Canadian Aboriginal Music Award for Best Rap Album. This was a huge honor! They were also nominated for the award in 2002 and 2003.

War Party made history in another way. They were the very first Indigenous rap group to have their music video shown on Much Music. Much Music was a very popular music TV channel in Canada.

After War Party

War Party performed and recorded music for 12 years. The group stopped making music together in 2004. After War Party, two of its members, Hellnback and Big Stomp, went on to form a new group called RezOfficial.

War Party in Movies

One of War Party's songs was used in a movie! Their song "This Land Was Ours" was featured in the 2008 film Adventures of Power. The movie was made by Ari Gold.
