Park History: How It Started

Back in 1921, people in the area were worried. They saw lots of factories being built and wanted to save natural spaces. So, they voted to create the Union County Park Commission. This group's job was to buy and protect beautiful natural areas.

In 1923, a famous design company called the Olmsted Brothers made plans for the park. Their father, Frederick Law Olmsted, designed New York's famous Central Park. The park was first called "Elizabeth Park" but later became "Warinanco."

Warinanco's Name: A Native American Story

This park is known for its lovely green fields and views. It was named in 1925 after a local Lenape tribal leader. His name was recorded by English settlers as "Warinanco" in 1664. That year, a group bought land, including what is now Union County, from Warinanco and another Lenape leader named Mattano.

Warinanco's name was also written as "Waerhinnis Couwee" or "Warrines." People think Warinanco was a minor sachem. A sachem is like a tribal elder or leader for the Hackensack people. The Hackensack people were a group within the larger Lenape tribe.
