History of Waveland
Waveland was planned out by John Milligan in 1835. The town started as a resting spot near a good spring. This spring was located between Terre Haute and Lafayette, Indiana.
After a trading post and a post office were built, Milligan developed the land around them. By 1850, Waveland had grown quite a bit. It had three general stores, three churches, and two inns. There were also two shops for making wagons and a blacksmith shop.
Famous Resident: T. C. Steele
Waveland was the childhood home of T. C. Steele, a famous American painter. He was known for his Impressionist style. This style uses small, visible brushstrokes to show how light changes.
Steele's parents, Samuel and Harriett, moved to Waveland around 1852. At that time, Steele was five years old. His father rented a saddle shop from John Milligan. Young Steele went to the Waveland Academy for his education. The local Presbyterian Church helped by building a new brick school for children. The Steele family owned a small house at 110 Cross Street until 1870. This house was built on one of Milligan's original lots.
Two important buildings in Waveland are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the George Seybold House and the T.C. Steele Boyhood Home.
