History of Wedderburn
Wedderburn was started by R. D. Hume. He was a very important businessman in the fishing industry nearby. Hume named the community after his family's old home. This was Wedderburn Castle in Scotland.
The Wedderburn post office opened in 1895. Wedderburn was first a company town. This means one company owned most of the businesses and homes. R. D. Hume's company had a monopoly on salmon fishing. He owned the fishing boats and the cannery. He also ran the town's store, a race track, and a cold storage plant. Hume moved to the Rogue River area in 1876. He eventually owned all the land along the river. This land stretched from the Pacific Ocean to where the river's tidewater ended.
